Epistolary diplomacy in the Arabic language, in the Sahel and Sahara, is common political practice. When, at the turn of the twentieth century, the French military entered these areas, the newcomers and the local rulers developed, under the terms of the local diplomatic practices, an epistolary dialogue which was carried on in Arabic and in an intellectual environment marked by Islamic culture.
