Empires and World-Systems. Tang and Islamic Empires, 7th-10th Century - 2012.

The rise and demise of empires is best apprehended in the context of world-systems that evolve according to cycles induced by a variety of forces. The expansion and disintegration of the Tang and Islamic empires between the 7th and the 10th century provide a good example of the links between large political constructions/structures and the world-system, and of interactions between the local, regional and global. Their insertion in a single world-system helps explain the parallel evolutions in these two empires, although they were built on partly different bases.
