The article considers the analysis of scientific controversies studies have been since their first appearance in the 1970s and studies the main transformations/exportations of that tool (for example, the social controversies around such objects as GMO). It looks at the way that this micro-historical methodological tool requiring the close following of actors in interaction has been used, the limits it induces, the ontologies of the social and the individual that it suggests, and what is at stake in political terms.
