Since its beginnings in Europe more than 20 years ago, health psychology has not integrated, in a systemic way, the cultural dimension into its models the way other social sciences have. This paper discusses the reasons this integration is needed and how it would foster cross-disciplinary research. These reasons relate to the history of the field of health studies, the development of cultural perspectives in psychology, and the benefits of a multidimensional approach to phenomena specific to health studies. This paper raises three questions regarding the role of culture in health practices. In which space should culture be placed? How should its role in health studies be conceived? What cultural concepts can be applied in health psychology? This paper addresses these questions from the perspective of theoretical and empirical research, as well as the practical experience of people working in the healthcare field.
