The discourse on translation has essentially been pictorial, using metaphors like copy or disguise whereby the act of translating is embedded in the logic of transparency, which proves disastrous. Transparency commands in particular the unassuming manner of the translator, to whom all subjectivity has been denied. However, one way to break the chain that links transparency to deletion, through illusion, is to disregard the image, the foreseeable. Focusing on the act of translating–the sonorous side of things, the listening–appears like a much more profitable path.
