The search for a cause, someone to blame, or compensation are inherent in suffering. Even if it is the outcome of chance, suffering must have a meaning. Misfortune is a complex experience involving the psychological, the legal, and the sociological. One problem of modern society is that it deals with suffering in an ambiguous way: in terms of risks, prevention, safeguards, and demands. In terms of justice, one problem is that the courts are summoned to assess suffering and allow mourning. Victims are in search of a meaning that escapes them, from which each shies away by splitting responsibility from fault and law from subjectivity.
