The “transport revolution” in Rio de Janeiro in the service of urban development and the politics of expropriations: The BRT Transoeste project - 2017.

The BRT Transoeste, a bus rapid transit system linking Barra da Tijuca and the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, was presented during its inauguration as one of the major legacies of the Olympic Games and as a “transport revolution” for Rio’s population as a result of the joint action of different levels of the Brazilian government. This article will examine this assumption based on contradictions observed in the operation of the BRT system—overcrowding, overloading, low-quality works, accidents—and on the spatial and social impacts of its implementation, which led to the forced expropriations of hundreds of slum residents.
