93

Objective: To evaluate the factors linked to the mother in the mortality of term newborns at the Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital Center (CHU SO) in Lomé (Togo) in order to contribute to its reduction. Material and method: This is a description and analysis of term newborns who died in hospital from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2017, at CHU SO. The main parameters studied were sociodemographic, obstetric, clinical, and therapeutic data. Results: The hospital incidence of mortality of term newborns was 10.3 percent, of which 84.4 percent were in the early neonatal period. Maternal factors associated with early neonatal death were rural origin, low level of education, primiparity, risk of infection, and vaginal or home delivery. Maternal protective factors were a history of neonatal mortality, clear amniotic fluid, and childbirth at CHU SO. Conclusion: Neonatal mortality remains a major public health problem in Togo in close connection with the state of maternal health. There is still a significant amount of work to be done with regard to the monitoring and follow-up of the mother in obstetric emergencies.
