Regulating imported deforestation in the European Union.
Bastiège, Marine
Regulating imported deforestation in the European Union. - 2023.
15
The EU regulation on “zero deforestation” supply chains strengthens companies’ extra-financial reporting obligations and makes it compulsory to implement preventive and corrective measures. The text thus contributes to the emergence of regulatory methods that bear witness to the development, through the European Green Deal, of transnational public management. The aim of this article is to present the main elements of this regulatory system and to outline the difficulties encountered in implementing it. The main difficulties are of an economic nature (risk of redirecting flows to other areas, concentrations) and are linked to local fraud. Collaboration with local authorities and complementarity with pre-existing certification systems are important for effective regulation.
