Religious Pluralism, Political Power and Society in Latin America

Religious Pluralism, Political Power and Society in Latin America - 2001.

The growing religious pluralism of Latin America is bringing about a redefinition of the relationship between religion, political power, and society. Shaped by a Catholic culture, the representations of power are still expressed in a corporatist model of society. This explains the collective mobilisation of the new Pentecostal religious actors, who are using their bargaining power with the state in order to fight the exclusive historical relationship held by the Catholic Church. This raises questions as to the type of religious secularisation which characterizes Latin America, and the role of religion in the current process of democratic transition.
