Information technology in a traditional retail supply chain: A structured literature review - 2019.

52

New business initiatives and current trends are creating more complexity in the retail supply chain and are necessitating the adoption of information technology (IT). The deployment of technology has increased both the efficiency of supply chain operations and customer satisfaction. As a result, IT has gained more attention from academics, practitioners, and policy makers. However, a holistic view of IT in the retail supply chain literature remains limited. This paper therefore conducts further research into this topic and discusses the role of IT in retail supply chains. The perceived benefits and challenges faced by retailers are evaluated following a structured literature review. The results reveal that the most widespread technologies are radio frequency identification, point-of-sale, and other inter-organizational systems that provide visibility across the value chain, reduce labor, decrease transaction time, and minimize operational costs. However, these innovative technologies remain limited to major retailers due to implementation costs and compatibility between legacy systems and trading partner systems.
