The authors examine the relationship between chronic pain and psychosis from psychoanalytical and psychopathological perspectives. This approach considers fibromyalgia as the most paradigmatic example of chronic pain without an organic substrate. This syndrome reveals itself as an enigma to the discourse of science and an obstacle to medical activity. In discussing the differences between compensation and supplementation, the authors present clinical cases to discuss the role that chronic pain can play in psychotic stabilization.Considering a transition from a descriptive to a functional psychopathology using the tools of psychoanalysis, the authors believe they can offer a new contribution to multidisciplinary care.
