Comparing the two versions of the Weberian sociology of domination results in invalidating Marianne Weber’s view, who considered them as two complementary parts of a whole. The second version, organized around the typology of legitimate domination, is a work of conceptual clarification: Max Weber restricts the concept of domination to the command-obedience relationship; he sharply distinguishes between patrimonialism and patriarchalism; and he focuses on the feudalism of fiefdoms and on the specific relationship between lords and vassals. He continues this work of clarification on the crucial topic of charisma and of its transformations (“routinization” and “objectivation”). Thus, this second exposition results in a conceptual framework pertaining to a logic of foundation. The contribution of the first exposition is quite different: through these writings, Weber makes use of ideal-typical categories in order to outline the historical development toward modernity and its obstacles, especially in the case of patrimonial and feudal dominations.
