Decision-making in the context of deep brain stimulation - 2016.

Deep Brain Stimulation is a technique that acts directly on the brain and allows a certain degree of control on behavior. Thus, the simple enunciation of these two characteristics raises the issue of the circumstances that allow for the possibility of decision-making as regards this technique, just as it would be for decision making by the patient undergoing this surgical procedure. Such an issue is central to bioethics, insofar as each intervention on the human body (including psychological interventions) needs the consent of the individual. This consent can only be valid if the subject is capable of understanding the whys and wherefores of the contemplated operation, hence being duly informed, to be in a position of freely and voluntarily giving consent. Therefore, informed consent connects, in bioethical decision-making, knowledge to will and cognitive abilities to autonomy.
