Jean-Paul Grandjean, who became de Fouchy in 1743 after being appointed Permanent Secretary at the Académie des Sciences received training in astronomy from Joseph-Nicolas before the latterà?s departure for Russia. At his house, Fouchy installed an observatory equipped with instruments from the manufacturer Claude Langlois, allowing him to make different observations. His main domain of interest was machines, notably the apparatus installed on quadrants to facilitate their use. As permanent secretary, he remained in office until 1776, delivering numerous eulogies including about a dozen for astronomers.
