Gérard Simon showed what would be the course of a general history of vision: the progressive distinction of the subject, the increasing importance of the body, and the progressive work of vision as a perceptive act. Some elements of vision as a mental process are presented here at three historic moments. The first concerns the period covered by Gérard Simon’s work. From there the future of perceptive inference, its implications and its controversies, are questioned in the 19th century and then in the 20th, by following the clue of spatial perception.
