This article is the continuation of a contribution made at the colloquium “Imperium Imperii,” which took place in Perpignan on November 22, 2016. The contribution briefly outlined the formation of a diplomatic network integrated into imperial entities that didn’t use diplomacy when it interacted with external agents. Curiously, the Umayyads of Cordoba were assimilated into this Jewish-Christian network by the Latin-speaking Spanish population. This fact left unanswered the question of the complex relationships between them and the Roman world, which can be observed from the era of the Damascus Caliphate (660-750). Furthermore, there is a more important question: the desire of the Umayyad Dynasty to join the Roman world during the first period of the Muslim conquest and to dominate the Empire.
