In Italy, since the mid-1970s, immigration has transformed the society and its family dynamics. In this historical context, by mobilising and articulating media documents and private narratives of Italian women married to foreign nationals from an Arab-Muslim country, the article shows the interference of public discourse on immigration and Islam in representations of mixed marital life. A neo-Orientalist and femonationalist doxa, as well as security and anti-Muslim discourse, permeate contemporary Italian society and produce racialised and gender stereotypes that affect not only foreigners, but also their spouses (mainly the wives).
