Social cognition in frontotemporal dementia - 2015.

Behavioral disorders in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) have been observed for decades, some of them causing dysfunctions in interpersonal relations. The latter can be in part explained by impairments in social cognition. Social cognition is an umbrella term for a set of processes specifically involved in social relations and that enable behavioral responses that are appropriate for social situations. Therefore, it can be regarded as a multidimensional concept, encompassing multi-determined dimensions. While social cognition impairments in FTD are much better understood nowadays, the specific role of different processes of social cognition in behavioral disorders is still little known. In this review we will examine different social cognition processes and their impairments in FTD, in particular those affecting emotion recognition, empathy, social knowledge, and theory of mind. Finally, we will discuss existing relations between different social cognition processes, as well as their links with behavioral disorders.
