36
This article provides an inventory of the research and the progress made so far with the dichotic listening task. This task, created about fifty years ago, has nowadays become a major tool in the field of experimental psychology. Its user-friendliness and ability to be used with large populations have prompted the interest of researchers. Its applications extend from the investigation of hemispheric asymmetries to the study of attentional factors, and more recently for the study of cognitive control. In this last domain of research, developmental data have contributed to revealing the strong link between top-down resources and cognitive control capacity across development. Moreover, the application of dichotic listening studies to pathological populations allows us to foresee their role for the advancement of diagnosis, treatments, and healthcare of the pathologies concerned.
