Written in 1914, the short story “In der Strafkolonie” is one of the few texts Franz Kafka published in his lifetime. As with all of his work, this short story has given rise to many interpretations. However, the meaning of this text is not exhausted. A new reading is possible, based on some of Michel Foucault’s works. Reading Kafka after Foucault enables us to understand what a literary text can bring to knowledge on criminal law and policy.
