Starting with the judgements of Musil, Friedell, Popper, Voegelin and Canetti on the extraordinary status of Freud and Kraus in the intellectual life of the period, this paper means to show how a community of points of view turns into a radical antagonism. Kraus is strongly opposed to the psychoanalytical claims of exposing the sufficient reasons for artistic creation. His favourite targets are the ‘sorcerer’s apprentice’, Wittels, Graf, Sketel and Sadger who, after their master (Gradiva) attempt to rule over the literary realm.
