In La Coscienza de Zeno, published in 1923, the first Italian novel to stage the character of a psychoanalyst, the famous Doctor S offers a representation of both the analyst and analysis which is very remote from the reality of psychoanalytical practices as we see them described in the Freudian corpus of the time. This is a literary analysis of the psychiatrist and of the therapy as they figure in the novel.
