Adopting an illuminating historiographical approach to processes of racialisation, this piece analyses how rules of blood purity were established in Iberian countries. Though this way of regulating professions and wider society has no direct equivalent in other European and colonial societies, it can nevertheless be assimilated to more widespread notions that the faults of ancestors are passed onto their descendants without any possibility of their being erased.
