Gays’€™ lifestyles classically presented in social science literature, appear as migration towards cities, which are supposedly anonymous, tolerant and liberating. To test this image, we used an online survey to collect more than 3,500 questionnaires of persons declaring themselves gay or lesbian. This article highlights the diversity of individual geographical trajectories, thus questioning the exclusivity of the archetypical model of “the flight towards the city.” (Éribon, 1999). After a presentation of the survey, the article first investigates the choices of localization at the time of moving from parents' homes, and then describes the geographical routes according to the number of stages, their localization, and their sequence. Describing the diversity of migratory routes of gays allows us, on the one hand, to think of various modes of subjectification, and, on the other hand, to open useful perspectives of research in queer sociology.
