The principles of the psychoeducational and multifamily approach are radically different from those developed by the classical systemic approach of family therapy. Rather than pinning schizophrenic issues on the family or society, this approach emphasizes that the etiology of schizophrenia is unknown for the most part. Schizophrenia is the expression of cerebral dysfunctions, which have an effect upon the family and social life. Psychoeducation intends to support the family, to educate it about the disorder and its treatments, and to teach it emotional, behavioral, and cognitive skills that can avoid relapses. A critical discussion of this model is then presented.
