The optimal structure of political decentralization is a key issue in public debate. It has been the object of many research contributions in economics, especially in federal states. Recently, a whole strand of the literature has investigated the political determinants which play a role in linking different levels of local authority and public policies at the territorial level. This article provides an overview, including the results of three recent articles looking at the situation in France.
