The Consistory of Paris and Grocery Stores: The Issue of Ritual Slaughter (1930s-1950s)Eating ritually slaughtered meat is a major pillar of Jewish religious observance. Furthermore, the conformity of food to biblical law (Kashrut) requires strict control over production and sales on the part of religious authorities. During the inter-war years, the « Association consistoriale israélite de Paris” (ACIP), which was contested by immigrant Jews from Eastern Europe, had only moderate success in stemming the tide of practices of corruption and fraud of which it was accused. During the occupation, the ACIP sought to maintain the possibility of keeping kosher, thus contributing to slowing the process of economic aryanization that was hitting Jewish restaurants and food shops, as well as helping--in whatever small ways they could--owners of kosher grocery stores to survive. Subsequently, at the beginning of the 1950s, the ACIP was confronted with an influx of North-African Jews with an affirmed religious identity, with whom they had to negotiate in order to rebuild.
