Comparative Approach to Socio-spatial Segregation in French Urban Areas - 2015.

11

The purpose of this paper is to measure the socio-spatial segregation in the fifty largest French urban areas. Three main conclusions emerge. The socio-spatial hierarchy of the territory is well marked in all cities. Segregation is stronger in the dense city (urban unit) compared to the sprawling city (urban periphery). Finally, inter-urban variations in the segregation appear structured by a rank effect (segregation is more marked in the large urban areas) and regional context (the most segregated cities are mainly in the northern half of France, legacy of the industrial revolution), but these two variables only partially explain differences in intensity.
