The sandjak of Alexandretta, an Ottoman district that was annexed by the French Mandate in Syria after First World War, was then ceded by France to Turkey in 1939. As from the 1860s, the multifaceted interests of the European powers unfolded in the city and its hinterland despite political and economic major disruptions. Families of European origin developed their commercial, vice-consular, and personal affairs by forging close relations between the Ottoman Empire, then Syria and Turkey on the one hand, and Europe on the other hand.
