This research questions the possible links between the trauma that the loss of the maternal object for a woman during pregnancy may represent, and the development of the bond with her child. We postulated that the loss of the maternal object during pregnancy in a young woman would disturb the grieving process and affect the future relationship forged with her child. We then employed this general hypothesis as an operational assumption. Our research comprised the case study of a young woman who suffered the loss of the maternal object during her second pregnancy, six years ago. Our two operational assumptions were tested using clinical methods (non-directive interviewing and a projective test: the Thematic Apperception Test). Mourning did not affect the quality of the relationship with her child but did have implications for her position as a woman and as a mother.
