The role of the numinous in Jung’s reception

Tacey, David

The role of the numinous in Jung’s reception - 2008.

92

This text examines the ongoing rejection of Jungianism, particularly by intellectuals and academic institutions. The author believes that the accusations of anti-Semitism leveled against Jung are not the main reason for his exclusion. Instead, the central role Jung gave to non-rational and religious factors was likely to rebuff the intellectual heirs of the Enlightenment. However, the religious is back in fashion, acquiring credibility in the eyes of the general public and artists. According to the author, the “terrifying” reality of the numinous is the cause of these reactions. In the current context, some might see Jung as a regressive, fostering a return to the pre-modern era. However, others consider him a visionary of the post-modern era.
