Jung’s background and life show that he was a man on the border, in the transitional area. In this sense, he is naturally closer to Oriental thought, with its consideration of the “middle void” and the creative interaction of opposites, than he is to Cartesianism, which likes clear-cut definitions. Taking these different approaches into account, the clinician’s position varies significantly. His diagnosis, the source of his insight into the symptom, can either freeze the transference relationship and confine the patient or, on the contrary, enable the patient to find his own path.
