As it is always difficult to separate, and for some more than others, the authors explore the conditions and processes at work in the promised separation which exists as soon as patients arrive in a private adult psychiatric clinic, so that this separation does not create another trauma. Through various clinical examples, the transference and dependency matters, which come along through the therapist’s presence, are brought up. The way in which the construction of the discharge project is cared for is also of interest in this article. At last, the importance of the setting is examined, in reference to transference, in order for the separation to take place and make sense, beyond the inevitable pain it can produce.
