The Freedom of the Subject Facing Psychological Determinism: The Question of Unconscious Will - 2017.

What urges on your body and mind when you are no longer capable of demonstrating any willpower? What enables you to choose what behavior to adopt when your conscious willpower seems to be crumbling? The unconscious, presumably. At this time, more than ever, I am no longer the master in my own house, even if I still exist. Thus, we have to admit that the unconscious seems to determine our bodily reactions and slips of the tongue. But what, exactly, does it mean to say that our unconscious chooses for us? It is aberrant to talk of a will, as willpower implies reason, and mainly a conscious being capable of making choices. What, then, are the foundations of action? We are to presume that the concept of acting, as urged by our unconscious, has got a meaning and responds to a choice, some kind of intentionality. This leads to the more enigmatic question of psychic determinism. So many questions are summed up by just one: willpower, and more precisely a willpower without a subject, that is an unconscious willpower.
