Changes in Sex Logics. Hermaphroditism in Nineteenth Century Medical and Legal Cases - 2017.

By analyzing the ways of deciding to which category of sex a person should belong in nineteenth-century cases of hermaphroditism in Europe, the author argues that sex as a category has profoundly changed. Presenting two examples of the three hundred cases analyzed, she shows how doubting one’s sex at the beginning of the century was treated as a problem between a person and his or her community (in which doctors sometimes acted as arbiters), whereas by the end of the century it had become a problem between the self of the person and his or her body, a problem to be solved within a medical-psychiatric individualized framework.
