With the aim of studying anxiety, depression, and prenatal emotional involvement with the infant, 87 primiparous women completed the Portuguese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and New Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale. High levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well of emotional involvement with the infant were found. Anxiety seems to activate the mother’s negative emotions toward the infant, but depressive symptoms point to the presence of unclear emotions and poor attachment to the infant.
