This study investigates the evolution of maternal anxiety during the perinatal stage and attempts to distinguish its different components. The objective of this research is twofold. In a first instance, the measure of maternity-specific anxiety is verified for pertinence. Secondly, we examine the effect of prenatal anxiety on the variance of postnatal anxiety. This discontinuity in pre- and post-partum anxiety is outlined and the divergent findings according to our measuring instruments are also discussed. Finally, recommendations are formulated and acknowledge the need to proceed with a longitudinal evaluation of anxious symptoms specific to various types of anxiety.
