Byzantium maintained the sophisticated Roman plurimetallic monetary system over a millennium, by contrast with the more restrained and simplistic systems of its Western neighbours. It successfully adapted it to change and to difficult contexts and introduced several innovations: systematic marks of value on the bronze small change from the late fifth to the eighth century, annual dating of most of these bronze coins from 537 through the early eighth century. It demonstrated a pioneering mastery of refining and debasement processes of gold coins and invented in the wake of the latter in the eleventh century the curious cup-shape (so-called scyphate) that became typical of the Late Byzantine period.
