Trips for autistic children from immigrant backgrounds to their countries of origin are sometimes organized for therapeutic purposes. In such situations, the caregivers who attend to them in France then have to face a phantasmagoric world that is very much out of the ordinary for them. By taking an interest in such journeys, the therapist allows families and the institution to give meaning to the implementation of other forms of care. Understanding the representations – worrisome or illusory – that departure may arouse in caregivers also helps alleviate certain misunderstandings and feelings of insecurity that obviously have a negative impact in mental care. The article illustrates this point through a clinical setting showing how medical care that started in a therapeutic kindergarten was coordinated with traditional therapies chosen by the Mahoran parents of an autistic child during a journey to Reunion.
