Post-partum depression is defined as a major depressive condition. The article addresses its aetiology and specific features as relating to the sufferers’ cultural background. Through analysis of a clinical case and a survey of the literature, it seeks to recognise the origins of this disturbance in the woman’s childhood. Indeed, it would appear that the construction of the woman’s personality, especially when emerging from the Oedipus complex, and early mother-and-child interactions, seem to be determining factors to the mother’s acceptance of her new role. Hence, culture seems to be a significant variable in managing this disturbance.
