Because of the variety of documentation it provides and the diversity of the populations it has hosted during the Persian, Ptolemaic and Roman periods, Egypt might well be assumed to be a particularly favourable environment in which to study ethnic identities. Even if ethnic identities are often very difficult to define, the Egyptian context at least highlights some of the major problems, both theoretical and practical, concerning the relationship between identities and material culture.
