Units of Measure in Architectural Design in Mauretania Tingitana - 2014.
70
The mensae mensuriae of Leptis Magna, Thibilis, and Cuicul appear to show the combined use of the Punic and Egyptian cubit with the Roman foot in the design and construction of North African buildings. The plans of some buildings in Volubilis, Lixus Banasa and Thamusida demonstrate that here too, in Mauretania Tingitana, the Roman foot and local units of measure were integrated into a single system. In addition, it is shown that the introduction of the pes monetalis and of new construction techniques reflects the changes in provincial society between the Mauretanian and Imperial periods.
