From the Unthought to the Unthinkable of Motherhood – Denial The mental processes accompanying pregnancy are highly complex, their conscious and unconscious dimensions helping each new mother to come into being. In each individual case, they take us back to the archaic, imaginary child, veiled in fantasy which lies deeply rooted behind each future mother. Denial of pregnancy is a defence mechanism designed to protect an individual who is suffering ; for the mother, the pregnancy becomes ‘unthought’ and for her social entourage it is thus ‘unthinkable.’ This article will explore the different ways in which such denial is expressed and will investigate the clear scission this sheds light on between the actions of the mother as a social being and the symbolic subject whose unconscious position expresses a past hitherto veiled in darkness and left unspoken.
