In the first decades of the nineteenth century, child labor raised the question of the social consequences of industrialization. Unprecedented humanitarian action led to the passing of a number of protective laws, though their application was uneven and difficult. While child labor was nothing new at the time, one may well wonder to what extent the “industrial revolution” altered its characteristics. Historians’ renewed interest in the phenomenon is not without divergent assessments and interpretations. This essay aims to introduce French readers to the various debates that have animated and continue to animate the historiography.
