Following the Suez Crisis in October 1956, the French and British governments granted asylum to refugees from Egypt on the condition that they were nationals or that they were from predominantly French or British families. These similar policies were liberally interpreted in France, but strictly applied in Britain. This article interrogates the importance of the refugees’ national and ethnic origins and their influence on their reception in both countries. This article studies the issue of nationality among the Jewish community in Egypt, the French and British immigration policies and its context, as well as the importance of the refugees’ origins.
