In this article, Gerhard Krüger inquires into the genesis, meaning – philosophical and historical – and achievements of romantic philosophy. Krüger demonstrates that romanticism is a reaction to the consequences of a previous decision, a decision that was to be the foundation of modern Enlightenment : the thinking Self’s decision to retreat in the interior citadel of reflexive consciousness, to separate itself from its own body, from the political community and from God. The origin of romanticism is the pain caused by the lack of any meaningful content that eventually comes to afflict modern existence.
