The “reluctance” toward Durkheim: Raymond Aron and his election to the Collège de France - 2022.

Raymond Aron was always quite reluctant to acknowledge the value of Durkheim sociology seen as holistic, ahistorical and far from any internal conflictual dimension. He felt closer to Max Weber sociology of action based on the actor’s values intention. Then, many Durkheim’s heirs were quite hostile to Aron sociological writings. Therefore, his election in April 1970 at the Collège de France, where many Durkheimians have been elected before him, as Marcel Mauss whom he rejects conception as a whole of the Nation, can be seen as a meaningful event. In this article, we describe this election, the votes of each member, the oral presentations, the important role played by Claude Lévi-Strauss, and how finally Aron was unanimously elected after confessing that his analysis of Durkheim sociology was not entirely “fair.”
