From an ethnographic perspective, this article addresses the territorial conflicts associated with different forms of use and meaning of the timber resources in the Indigenous Land Alto Turiaçu, Maranhão (Brazil). Despite being officially recognized as a territory of exclusive use of the Ka’apor, Tembé and Timbira peoples since the 1980s, this indigenous land is the subject of predatory action by timber companies that extract this resource illegally. Considering the position of the various actors in front of the uses and knowledges of nature, the local and micro regional scene is analyzed, focusing the vision of indigenous leaders, the participation of indigenous women and their struggle for the defense of territory and natural resources.
