Our qualitative study examines the resilience in 15 Belgian couples of parents (30 mothers, fathers) of children with intellectual disability, presenting genetic syndromes (Down, Fragile-X, Williams, Angelman, Rett), by identifying their perceptions of critical events, protective factors vs. risk factors, by means of interviews. It takes an interest in their surpassing of the traumatism linked to the diagnosis notification as well as to their adjustment to the stressful life events during the education. The study shows the applicability of the model of social sharing of emotions (Rimé, 2005) and the model of family factors related to the development of atypical children (Guralnik, 1997; Van Hooste & Maes, 2003) in order to clarify the chronological and multifactor dynamic of these parents’ resilience process. These models could serve to elaborate a “cartography of family resilience”, useful for accompaniment.
